We hope that everyone has a fantastic Waitangi Day on Thursday! A reminder that both our SCIP clinics in Christchurch and Lower Hutt will be closed on Thursday 6 February 2025.We'll be back to assist you during our regular office hours on Friday 7 February from 8:30am.
Who loves to swim in summer? Some of us who wear cochlear implants are happy to be ‘ears off’ and just enjoy a quick dip without our CIs, but if you like or need to hear what’s going on around you while you take a swim, all our manufacturers have different waterproofing options available depending on what type of processor you have. Please contact SCIP for advice as to what would be best for your speech processor. All the options are suitable for salt, chlorinated and freshwater swimming. Please note you need to use rechargeable batteries with all these swimming options as zinc air batteries will run out of air and stop working! If you have any other questions about swimming with cochlear implants, please contact SCIP.
Running has given Talor Gilmer a lot of joy in his life and he encourages young people to pursue their sports dreams.Talor makes time around his work and family commitments to enjoy ultra-distance running races which are even longer than marathons.Talor was born hearing but through genetics he began to lose his hearing as a child. Talor wore hearing aids and teachers used a microphone to help boost his comprehension, but by age 13 he was profoundly deaf. Teacher aides took class notes for him through intermediate and high school. As his hearing deteriorated in his teenage years, he believes competitive running was a way to be with people but not necessarily have a conversation. When he was 17, he realised he was missing out on his friends’ conversations. “I was starting to lose the relationships as it was hard going to gatherings outside school, so I started to withdraw a little.”Talor went for audiology tests and found out he was eligible for a cochlear implant in either ear.Talor would love to see a strong pathway to international competition for young Deaf athletes with good funding and support. For a time he worked as an administrator for Deaf Sports New Zealand. You can read more about Talor's hearing journey in our 20th Anniversary Booklet, Hear Our Stories - available for free download via our website here: www.scip.co.nz/hear-our-stories
