Southern Cochlear Implant Programme

More than 30 people in Dunedin woman Christine Hughes’ extended family are associated with the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme.As well as herself, her two children Nathan and Tina, her three sisters, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews have cochlear implants.The family has mitochondrial nonsyndromic hearing loss and deafness which can be inherited by males and females but passes down through females.Her nephew, Nicholas Rees, was the first in the family to receive a cochlear implant when he was 13, while Christine was happy to wait and see how it worked out before joining the waiting list. “It was amazing to watch him progress,” she says.Choosing to have her own implant was a question of why not, rather than why, due to the prospect of improving her life through hearing people speak.“Having the cochlear implant was a godsend – the changes in my communication abilities allowed me to do different courses for work and managing staff became easier.”Now Christine loves her role helping people with intellectual disabilities by running a day programme where they participate in games, activities and crafts.
